Gesture recognition technology developer Softkinetic announced today that it will provide a middleware solution for a US military training system developed by R&D provider Raytheon BBN Technologies. Raytheon chose Softkinetic's iisu middleware to develop a gesture-based interface for its virtual world technology, which allows soldiers to train for real-world combat in immersive 3D environments. "By using Softkinetic's 3D camera-based gesture recognition technology we can further improve the sense of being immersed in the simulation," said David Diller, Senior Scientist at BBN Technologies. "Our training work strives to prepare soldiers today for the uncertain needs of tomorrow. The more we allow soldiers to train the way they fight, the better prepared they will be." Raytheon's VESSEL Damage Control Trainer -- a shipboard navigation, communication, and damage control simulator -- recently won the Best Game award in the Business category of the I/ITSEC'S Serious Games Showcase & Challenge. Softkinetic's iisu middleware uses a 3D depth-sensing camera to capture gestures and movements in real-time. The technology has previously been featured in gaming applications and in fitness and rehabilitation systems. "From the beginning we always imagined that our 3D imaging solutions could bring digital simulations to the next level," said Softkinetic chief strategy officer Eric Krzeslo. "We are very excited that a leading high tech company in the security field such as Raytheon BBN Technologies has decided to work with our iisu middleware to build their sophisticated virtual reality simulations."
