Sony Computer Entertainment announced that it will release is free PhyreEngine game engine for PSP, which helps studios take advantage of the portable's strengths while building their titles, to PSP game developers this spring.
Initially introduced in 2008 with support as a free and cross-platform middleware tool, PhyreEngine has since been adopted by a number of studios and used in PSN titles such as thatgamecompany's Flower
, Sidhe Interactive's Shatter
, and many others.
SCE will demonstrate PhyreEngine for the PSP along with Tunnel Shooter, a demo using one of PhyreEngine's game templates (functional vertical slices of different game genres provided as full source code with PhyreEngine), at its Game Developers Conference booth this week.
The company adds that it plans to continue to deploy measures designed to encourage game development for the PSP, as well as continue to expand the platform to offer "interactive entertainment experiences only available on the PSP system".
