Speaking at this week's Develop Conference in Brighton, Culture Minister Ed Vaizey launched a £5m project that will give a substantial economic boost to the games industry throughout the UK. Jointly supported by the UK Government and the European Regional Development Fund, the project will be managed by funding partner Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland. The first phase of the project is a £2 million fund that will help fledgling companies develop games based on original intellectual property. "This fund is a direct response to what many developers tell us is needed," said Vaizey. "Working with Skillset, the fund will also ensure talented students are able to gain valuable work experience with the industry." Vaizey continues: "Whilst the focus is on small companies, larger companies can also benefit by joining as a commissioning partner. This will, we hope, help build new relationships and encourage cross-platform growth." Individual grants of up to £25,000 will be awarded to game developers who apply and are chosen for funding. Abertay's staff will assist with commercialization and project management for funded prototypes. Vaizey notes that the project aims to establish 30 new companies, support 80 existing smaller businesses, and create up to 400 new jobs. Project leaders estimate that 300 students, graduates, and professionals will develop career skills by working on funded titles. Application information is available at http://www.abertay.ac.uk/business/support/apply/.
