Video: What playing poker taught me about designing game AI

At GDC 2015 Intrinsic Algorithm's Dave Mark shares a newfound love of poker, some of the logic required in playing the game, and how it relates to AI problems that developers face on a daily basis.

Designing realistic artificial intelligence for video games is tricky business for many reasons, not least of which because you typically want to build an AI that plays like a crafty human, not a robot.

That means designing human-like logic systems, and Intrinsic Algorithms' Dave Mark believes that developers can learn a lot from studying the way that humans design rules and systems around a bluff-heavy game like poker.

As part of the popular Turing Tantrums 'rant' session during the Artificial Intelligence Summit at GDC 2015, Mark (a veteran game designer and AI developer) discussed his newfound love of poker, some of the logic required in playing the game, and how it relates to AI problems that game developers have to consider daily.

For those who missed it in person, Mark's segment of the panel is now available to watch for free over on the GDC Vault's new YouTube channel.

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
