Video: How imaginary maps can inspire players and design
Former Crytek producer Bernd Diemer explains how maps of imaginary places -- from Metroid's labyrinths to Fallout 3's wasteland -- can influence and inspire design.

- Crytek veteran Bernd Diemer recalls his fascination of maps in games such as Assassin's Creed and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and even in books which could help him imagine a story before he could read. In this GDC Europe 2010 lecture, Diemer says that a map can provide a foundation for systems in games. He also believes maps in-game can be blank, and that there can be a joy to filling them in.
