Gearbox Software has taken the wraps off its next major project:
Battleborn, a first-person shooter that will be published by 2K Games on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The game is expected to launch before the close of parent company Take-Two Interactive's 2016 fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2016, and seems to draw blatant inspiration from popular MOBAs like
Dota 2 and
League of Legends.
According to
reports from enthusiast outlet Game Informer,
Battleborn includes a 5-person cooperative campaign mode as well as a 5-on-5 team-based competitive multiplayer mode in which players pick a hero and battle their rivals alongside a steady stream of AI-controlled grunt characters, leveling up and gaining new abilities throughout the match.
While Gearbox is involved in a number of projects, this is the first game it's announced that's exclusive to PC and contemporary console hardware -- company leader Randy Pitchford
recently explained that the upcoming
Borderlands game is targeted at last-gen consoles because that's where the
Borderlands audience is.
Battleborn seems to be an attempt to build a new franchise for a new generation of console hardware.
