Google Play kicks off new initiative to support diverse game makers

Google is expanding its Infinite Deviation program to help support marginalized people in the early stages of their game development careers.

Google is expanding its Infinite Deviation program to help support marginalized people in the early stages of their game development careers.

The company is now accepting applications for the inaugural Infinite Deviation: Games program from developers with less than two years of professional game design experience, with the goal of offering mentorship and funding to three mobile game projects over eight months.

Thanks to its focus both on inclusivity and fledgling developers, Infinite Deviation: Games could be a valuable program for up and coming game developers that belong to groups typically underrepresented in the field.

Google notes that it is specifically looking for applicants with less than two years of industry experience with an idea for an original mobile game that will be of interest to underrepresented groups and ultimately bring more marginalized folks toward game development.

"By promoting original games that resonate with underrepresented audiences, we hope the program creates more favorable perceptions of computer science, bust biases, and nurture acceptance through an activity many enjoy," explains Google.

While the program is open to all developers with less than two years of industry experience, Google notes that the program’s goal is to support game designers from all backgrounds and encourages those from underrepresented groups to apply.

Ultimately, Google Play will select three mobile game ideas based on each project’s concept, design, inclusivity, and multicultural appeal to be developed with support from the program and eventually released on Google Play while the top 25 applicants will receive additional feedback on their game pitches.

More details on the program and the application process can be found over on the Infinite Deviation website
