EA's mobile division is trying to make games for smartwatches

EA Mobile chief Frank Gibeau sees wearable tech like the Apple Watch as a viable platform for games, and in this CNet interview he explains what EA's smartwatch game prototype teams are working on.
"Wearables are going to increase in performance, capability and unique functions over time that we believe will enable gaming experiences."
- EA Mobile chief Frank Gibeau sees wearable tech like the Apple Watch as a viable platform for mobile gameplay. Earlier this week Apple unveiled its Watch wearable device, and Electronic Arts was one of the many companies confirmed to be developing apps for the platform. Today, EA Mobile executive vice president Frank Gibeau gave a few carefully-worded answers to a CNet inquiry on the subject that might spark some fresh ideas in mobile game developers flummoxed by smartwatches as a platform. "We have two teams prototyping wearable experiences that are not only standalone, but also some ideas where you can actually use the fitness component in the watch that can unlock capabilities in the game that might be on your iPhone," Gibeau told CNet. "Or you could do crafting or some other auction trading on your watch that goes back into your tablet game that you might check out later when you get home." While Android smartwatches have been around for some time, EA seems to believe that Apple's 2015 entry into the market heralds the emergence of wearables as a bona fide platform for game makers. "One of the things we're intrigued with in the mobile division is seeing wearables emerge as a gaming platform," says Gibeau. "We think we're in the early stages of that." You can find more information on EA's mobile development efforts and further comments from Gibeau over on CNet's website.
