Crytek To Release Free CryEngine 3 SDK In August

Crysis developer Crytek will release a free SDK for CryEngine 3, the engine used in the creation of Crysis 2. The SDK will be free for non-commercial use, with a commercial license available.
A free SDK for CryEngine 3 -- the engine used in the making of Crysis 2 -- will be available this August, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has revealed. In an open letter posted to the company's modding community, Yerli said the August release will be free of charge, and will be complete, calling it "the same engine we use internally, the same engine we give to our licensees, the same engine that powers Crysis 2." The package will also contain documentation, Crysis 2 code samples, and example assets. The SDK will be free to use for non-commercial purposes, though it can be used for commercial games as well, with Yerli saying the company "will offer an innovative low cost licensing model" for anyone going that route. A separate plan for non-gaming applications will also be available. The release will follow a dedicated Crysis 2 editor that will be released "early in summer."
