In the first week of the post-gift giving season in Japan, roughly analogous to the first week after Christmas in the West, sales have fallen expectedly sharply. Despite a lack of new releases in the top ten though there has been movement of interest, with Wii Sports becoming the first Wii title to reach number one, after several weeks of strong sales. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops has also continued to impress, with Konami being forced to issue an apology for a lack of stock the previous week and the title reappearing in the top ten this week. Also of note is the performance of Resistance: Fall of Man in Japan, which was once again the best selling PlayStation 3 title of the week, at number forty, with a lifetime total of around 100,000 units – far more than would normally be expected of a Western developed first person shoot ‘em-up. Perhaps more importantly than the success of Wii software, for the first time in over a year the Nintendo DS has not been the best selling console of the week - with improved supply allowing the Wii to succeed it with a total of 93,708 units sold. By comparison the PlayStation 3 saw a sharp drop off in sales to 25,531 units, despite anecdotal evidence suggesting little or no supply problems. The Nintendo DS sold 89,328 units in total, followed by the PSP at 48,804 – the closest the two formats have been in over a year, despite PSP sales actually being down on the same period last year. After the PlayStation 3 at 25,531 units the PlayStation 2 was the next best selling console with 22,663 units sold, followed by the Xbox 360 at 9,035 units, the Game Boy Advance family of consoles at 3,585 units and the GameCube at 611.
