Despite what was initially reported as a subdued launch, Nintendo Australia has announced that the console has sold 32,901 units in its first four days, according to official figures from GfK. These numbers apparently break the Australian record for the biggest launch of a video game console in the nation’s history. “The launch of Wii has been a fantastic success for us,” said Rose Lappin, director of sales and marketing. “We aim to bring gaming to the masses and I think we have taken some large steps in the right direction. Our main priority now is to deliver as many units as possible into retail channels, as quickly as possible, to try and meet this exceptional demand.” As in all Western territories so far reported, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was the most successful launch game in Australia, although no specific figures or attach ratios were provided as of yet. Long considered Nintendo’s weakest major market, the console’s success in Australia was mirrored in the UK. In Britain, the Wii sold 50,000 units in its first week on sale, which was also categorized as the best ever for the country. As PAL territories, neither country is expected to see a PlayStation 3 launch until at least March 2007.
