Video: See where Resident Evil's creator wants to take the horror genre

Mainstream horror games today are heavy on the action and lacking in the horror. Can one of the genre's old guard bring the creeps back to horror game design?
We've seen big-budget horror video game design transition from a focus on creeping dread to all-out action fests that rarely horrify. This has actually left an opening for a bit of a horror game renaissance among the independent game developer community, with titles like Amnesia, Anna, Slender and Lone Survivor, which all de-emphasize combat, and lay the creepy atmosphere down thick. These independently-made games have drawn a following, but apparently, heavy action is what some bigger publishers think people would rather buy. We knew that Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami was working on a new horror game with Fallout owner Bethesda Softworks, which owns his studio Tango Gameworks. Today, we got more of a hint at the kind of mood he wants to strike with his first Tango game, The Evil Within. There's zero gameplay shown here, but the trailer is light on guns, and heavy on atmosphere and jarring imagery. Maybe Mikami is trying to bring the creeps back into mainstream horror game design...
