Steam users can now send gift cards digitally

Gone are the days when Steam users would have to venture out into the world to buy and send Steam Gift Cards to friends.

Valve has made a minor tweak to Steam’s gifting service just ahead of the holiday season in the form of the new, digital gift cards being offered through the platform.

Starting today, Steam users are able to purchase gift cards valued between $5 and $100 directly within Steam and send those cards to anyone on their Steam friends lists from within the digital storefront itself.

Previously, Steam gift cards were only available as physical objects, so the new addition should save shoppers a trip to the store or post office this holiday season. It’s also worth noting that the change itself falls just months after Valve made a more significant change to Steam’s gifting system by requiring gifts to be sent at the moment of purchase.

However, there are a handful of restrictions on who and how players can send the digital gift cards. Valve requires that the gifter and the giftee must have been Steam friends for at least three days prior to sending a card. Additionally, gift cards can’t be purchased with existing wallet funds, but players will be able to send the cards internationally with no issue.
