Sony is releasing an updated PSVR headset later this month

Sony is preparing to release a new version of its PlayStation VR headset, which has sold over 1 million units since launching last October.

Sony is preparing to release a new version of its PlayStation VR headset, which has sold over 1 million units since launching last October.

The updated headset will pack a few new features like a slimmer, streamlined connection cable, and a tweaked design that enables stereo headphone cables to be integrated directly with the device.

Notably, it'll also sport an updated processor unit that supports HDR (high dynamic range) pass through, allowing users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on their television without having to disconnect the processor unit between the TV and the PS4.

The revised headset will launch in Japan later this month before heading to North America at "a later date."

It'll retail at the same $399 price point as the current model, and consumers will be able to differentiate between the old and new versions by looking for the updated imagery and model numbers on the PSVR packaging.

"The previous PS VR’s model number is CUH-ZVR1, and the new PSVR’s model number is CUH-ZVR2," reads a post on the Sony blog. "Also, the product image on the packaging will be updated to show changes on the new model, like the integrated headphones on the VR headset."

Unfortunately, because the cables of the CUH-ZVR1 and CUH-ZVR2 are different, anyone who's already grabbed a PSVR won't be able to swap out their current processor unit for the newer version.
