Officials from Sony Japan have confirmed plans to release a redesigned version of the PlayStation 2 console. Although the new hardware model will be smaller than ever, with a built-in AC adapter, it will still be sold at the same price in Japan. The hardware revision was rumored earlier in the month, but the smaller console was predicted to be accompanied by a 25 percent price drop. According to a an official Sony press release, this is not the case in Japan at least, where it will remain at a price of ¥16,000 ($139). The console will see a drop in weight from 850 grams to 720 grams and will include an internal, rather than external, AC adaptor. The console is due to go on sale in Japan on November 22nd in three color variations: “Charcoal Black”, “Ceramic White” and “Satin Silver”. A release outside Japan has not been confirmed, but is reported not to be available in Europe until early 2008. With sales still buoyant around the world, Sony currently aims to sell 12 million units of the PlayStation 2 in the financial year ending March 2008. By comparison, the PlayStation 3 is expected to sell 11 million units worldwide.
