Retailer GameStop has revealed initial sales data for Rockstar’s record-breaking Grand Theft Auto IV, with 64 percent of sales of the game going to the Xbox 360 and 36 percent to the PlayStation 3. The data was initially provided to Newsweek’s Level Up weblog, with the sales ratio suggesting an almost 2 to 1 sales advantage in the Xbox 360’s favor. The website also ascertains, using incomplete NPD Group data, that the percentages point to an underperformance on the Xbox 360 and better than expected results on the PlayStation 3. Before the game’s launch, much speculation had arisen as to which format would benefit more from the game’s release – with the downloadable content and higher userbase of the Xbox 360 weighed against the consumer perception that Grand Theft Auto is traditionally a PlayStation franchise. Talking to Level Up, PlayStation senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille suggested that: “GameStop probably does a little bit better with the early adopter crowd. There's a larger installed base right now on Xbox 360 than on PS3. So it's not surprising that there's going to be more selling on Xbox 360 than PS3.”
