UK trade paper MCV has claimed to
reveal details of a new iteration of the PlayStation 2 console, whose hardware redesign will allow for a 25 percent price drop.
Although Sony officials have refused to comment on the rumors, it is claimed that the “Compact” PlayStation 2 will be released in the U.S. in the New Year for just $99, down from the current suggested retail price of $129. Proportional price cuts are also expected worldwide.
It is further claimed that the new version of the hardware will feature a built-in power supply, lowering the cost and giving the console an even smaller physical footprint than before.
Sales of the PlayStation 2 in 2007 have remained buoyant almost worldwide, despite the introduction of the three next generation consoles, and despite a dramatic fall in exclusive software for the format.
Whatever plans Sony may have for future games titles is not speculated on by MCV, although the company’s current focus, particularly in Europe, continues to be the mainstream friendly
SingStar,
Buzz! and
EyeToy series.
