PSP On Top In Japan, Wii Hits 6 Million Lifetime Total

The slowdown in software sales this week in Japan has had an expected knock on effect in hardware sales, although the PSP has retained its now regular place as the best selling console of the week, even as the Wii passes the 6 million lifetime sales mark.
Market research firm Media Create has revealed data for weekly hardware sales in Japan for the week ending May 18th, following details of the software top thirty. The slowdown in software sales this week has had an expected knock on effect in hardware sales, although the PSP has retained its now regular place as the best selling console of the week. Even so, Sony’s portable saw sales fall by over 19,000 units to 70,536. The Wii experienced an even more precipitous drop of over 25,500 units to 41,572. Nevertheless the console passed the 6 million lifetime-to-date sales mark in Japan this week, with almost 1.5 million sales so far this year. Nintendo DS sales fell by over 16,000 units to a new low of 34,905 for the week. PlayStation 3 sales dipped by a few hundred to 7,701 units, while PlayStation 2 sales fell by a similar amount to 7,022 units. The Xbox 360 sales drop was also measured in the hundreds, for a total of 1,298 units. Overall in the top fifty there were thirty-one titles for the Nintendo DS, nine for the Wii, four for the PSP, three for the PlayStation 2, two for the PlayStation 3 and one for the Xbox 360.
