The success of New Super Mario Bros has continued in Japan, with the game still easily topping the sales chart in its second week, with a total of 334,208 units sold – apparently accounting for all 1,200,000 units of the game so far made available in Japan. The game’s success has come at time when the domination of the Nintendo DS format in Japan has rarely seemed more obvious, with all but two of the seven Nintendo DS titles in the charts being million sellers. The more recently released Tetris DS seems well on its way towards that goal, with 574,875 units so far sold, while perhaps one of the greatest successes of the Nintendo DS format so far is in making a relative success of Metroid Prime: Hunters in Japan. Although Metroid Prime: Hunters debuted to a relatively unremarkable 32,467 unit sales it has already outperformed both of the two GameCube entries in the series in Japan. Not only is the Metroid franchise less popular generally in Japan, than the rest of the world, but the first person shoot ‘em-up genre is even less so, making the Nintendo DS game’s success something of a breakthrough. In terms of hardware sales, the Nintendo DS sold predictably well with 136,773 sales in total (including 1,159 units of the original version of the console). The PSP was in second place with 24,595 unit sales, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 18,513 and the Game Boy Advance family of consoles at 5,664. The Xbox 360 recorded 1,245 unit sales during the week, and the GameCube just 798.
