Japanese Hardware: DS Still Ahead As Wii Beats PSP

The Nintendo DS continues to dominate winter hardware sales in Japan, with total sales for the format up almost 25,000 units on the previous week. The Wii also had a good week, increasing its sales to overtake the PSP for the first time in several months.
The Nintendo DS continues to dominate winter hardware sales in Japan, with total sales for the format up almost 25,000 units on the previous week to 138,744. Of these 126,648 sales were for the new DSi model and 12,096 for the older DS Lite. For the first time in several months, though, the PSP has been beaten to second place, ousted by the Wii. Although Nintendo’s home console format had no major new software releases this week, and only two titles in the top 10, hardware sales jumped by nearly 7,000 units to 56,702. The PSP was only just behind, falling by just a few hundred units to a total of 54,782. Sales of the PlayStation 3 also fell, by around 4,500 units, to 30,309 for the week. The Xbox 360 was able to maintain its new weekly average of around 10,000 units. Despite the success of Fallout 3, sales were actually down by 1,500 to 9,988 for the week. PlayStation 2 sales were static at 5,743 units. Overall in the software top 50, there were 21 titles for the Nintendo DS, 11 for the Wii, six each for the PSP and PlayStation 3, and three each for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2.
