Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Heads Blockbuster Week

The Japanese winter gift-giving season is now in full swing, with four games selling over 100,000 units this week, and Animal Crossing: City Folk topping 300,000, plus The Last Remnant becoming the second fastest-selling Xbox 360 title in Ja
The Japanese winter gift-giving season, which always tracks several weeks behind the West, is now in full swing with four of the top 10 games all selling over 100,000 units. The chart is led by the new Wii version of Animal Crossing, with an impressive 305,000 units sold on its debut. The number two seller is the new Nintendo DS remake of classic SNES role-playing game Chrono Trigger from Square Enix. Already re-released once during the PSone era, the fan favorite title sold 271,000 units in its first week. At number three is Namco Bandai’s latest use of the Mobile Suit Gundam anime license on the PSP, and a conversion of coin-op title Gundam vs. Gundam. The game sold 267,000 units, including a hardware bundle with the PSP itself. With the top four selling games all for separate platforms, the number four spot went to Square Enix’s The Last Remnant on Xbox 360. Despite being designed specifically with a Western audience in mind, the game has enjoyed significantly better critical acclaim and sales in its home country. The game’s first week sales of 102,000 units made it the second fastest-selling Xbox 360 title ever in Japan, just behind Tales of Vesperia on 108,000 units. The fifth and final new entry in the top 10 is Sega’s Saka-Tsuku DS: Touch And Direct for the DS, a tactical soccer simulation. The game sold 72,000 units in its first week. Outside of the top 10 there were a number of other new entries, with Disgaea platform game spin-off Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? on PSP at number 13. PlayStation 2 adventure game Koihime Musou appears at number 15 and 2D shoot ‘em-up Otomedius G on Xbox 360 enters at number 16. Sony’s Secret Agent Clank on PSP debuts at number 23, adventure game Koisuru Otome to Shugo no Tate: The Shield of AIGIS on PS2 enters at number 25 and anime license Katekyoo Hitman Reborn! Kindan no Yami no Delta appears at number 27.
