Guerrilla Games ending online support for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3

Both games will lose online services on March 29, 2018. For Killzone 2, the closure will end 9 years of online support.

Guerrilla Games has announced that both Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 will be losing their online features in 2018

After nearly a decade of support, it seems Guerrilla Games has made the call to pull the plug on the two titles. Maintaining online servers for any game can be a costly affair, and, after a while, devs naturally have to consider if the costs outweigh the benefits.

Both PlayStation 3 titles are set to have their online servers decommissioned on March 29, 2018. For Killzone 2, that marks almost exactly 9 years of support while Killzone 3 was kept online for a still-impressive 7 years. Gurrellia notes that both games will remain functional for the most part, as the single-player campaign for both will remain accessible following the shutdown.

"As we near the end of the online lifecycle for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3, we’d like to express how grateful we are for all the support and feedback we’ve received from the community over the last eight years," reads the announcement. "Your enthusiasm is what drove us to hone our craft and grow as a studio. We hope you enjoyed playing Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 online as much as we did creating them."

The two Killzone titles now join the ranks of a number of other notable PlayStation 3-era games that have ended support for online features. Just last month, From Software revealed that its massively influential Demon's Souls game would lose its online features in a similar manner after 9 years of support.
