New sales data revealed by marketing research firm and Famitsu publisher Enterbrain suggest that the Wii has now sold over 5 million units in Japan, since it was launched in December 2006. Enterbrain figures usually broadly agree with weekly data from rival Media Create, which last week put the Wii’s total at around 4.91 million units. According to Enterbrain the console’s lifetime-to-date total in Japan is now over 5.02 million. By comparison Enterbrain indicate that the more expensive PlayStation 3 has sold 1.81 million units in Japan, since its debut in November 2006. Media Create puts the PlayStation 3’s total at 1.74 million, with the Xbox 360 on 0.52 million, the PlayStation 2 on 20.97 million, the PSP on 7.92 million and the Nintendo DS on 21.54 million. The best selling Wii software in Japan is Wii Sports, which is not bundled with the console, on 2.67 million. Second is hardware bundle Wii Play on 2.14 million, followed by Mario Party 8 at 1.15 million, Wii Fit on 1.11 million and Super Mario Galaxy on 0.84 million.
