E3: Valve Releasing Portal 2 To PS3 With Steamworks Support

Valve announced that Portal 2 will launch on PS3 simultaneously with the much-anticipated game's PC and Xbox 360 releases, and will include support for Steamworks features that the Xbox 360 will not offer. The developer's Gabe Newell, who's previously lambasted the PlayStation 3, going so far as to describe the system as "a waste of everybody's time", says that the PS3 edition of Portal 2 will be "the best console version of the game", thanks to its inclusion of Steamworks. With support for Steamworks, Portal 2 for PS3 will offer features and services like auto updates, downloadable content, community features, and more. The Steamworks development platform has been previously deployed on Windows and Mac, and will be available in Portal 2's PC releases. Valve recently delayed the release of Portal 2, which was originally intended to hit stores late this year, after admitting that "making games is hard." The sequel to the company's award-winning first-person puzzle/action game is now slated to ship for all platforms some time in 2011. "When the PlayStation 3 was introduced, I was the one of the platform's biggest critics," admits Valve president and co-founder Gabe Newell, who made a surprise appearance at Sony's E3 press show earlier today to debut footage for Portal 2." He adds, "However, Sony Computer Entertainment has proved that the PlayStation 3 is the most open platform of all the current generation consoles and has worked extremely hard to make the platform the most desirable for consumers and developers." "As such, we are delighted to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 and believe the Steamworks support included will make it the best console version of the game."
