Officials from Nintendo of Europe have announced that Nintendo DS title Nintendogs has sold almost 2 million units in Europe, since its launch on October 7th 2005. Nintendogs became the first million selling Nintendo DS title in Japan, with a total of 1,180,000 units sold to date. Over 5 million copies of the game (including all three variants – which differ only in terms of box art and the types of breed initially available) have been sold worldwide, with almost 1.5 million units sold in the U.S. It is highly unusual for any Nintendo franchise to sell the greatest number of units in Europe, which combined with the high number of female users does suggest that the game and console have managed to reach a significantly different market than normal Nintendo releases. Specific results for individual countries have not been given, but judging by its position in various national charts, the game has proven most popular in France, Spain and the United Kingdom.
