Nintendo’s
Mario Party 8 has come out on top during one of the busiest weeks of sales for several weeks in Japan, with a total of 265,000 units sold.
With one of the biggest debuts ever for the series, the game has blocked Sony’s
Minna no Golf 5 (aka
Hot Shots Golf 5/
Everybody’s Golf 5) on PlayStation 3 from reaching the top spot, with 152,000 unit sales.
In third place, Bandai Namco’s Nintendo DS version of
Taiko: Drum Master also performed extremely well with 94,000 unit sales. Meanwhile Square Enix’s unorthodox Nintendo DS role-playing game
It’s a Wonderful World, from the same team as
Kingdom Hearts, saw initial sales of 77,000 units.
The second new Wii title in the top ten is Bandai Namco’s first Mobile Suit Gundam game on the system, with 46,000 units sold. Almost beating it with 45,000 units sold was the PSP version of
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, with Rockstar’s premier franchise continuing to be one of the most consistently high performing Western titles in Japan.
The second Western developed title of the week is Bethesda’s
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which sold 40,000 units on the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 version of the game is not due for release in the territory until September 27th.
