Doom gets Vulkan support for 'super-high framerates'

Doom creator id Software has revealed the frenetic shooter is about to get a framerate boost with the addition of Vulkan support on PC.

Doom creator id Software has revealed the frenetic shooter is about to get a framerate boost with the addition of Vulkan support on PC.

Launched in February this year, Vulkan is The Khronos Group's latest cross-platform open graphics API.

The graphics tech allows for low-level hardware access and moves the majority of driver overhead into the hands of developers.

Valve recently patched the embryonic API into Dota 2, and in the case of Doom, id says Vulkan will bring "speed [and] high framerates."

"When we were looking to adopt Vulkan for Doom, the main question we asked ourselves was: 'What’s the gamer benefit?' Ultimately the biggest benefit will be high framerates," explained the studio, writing on the Bethesda blog.

"There are a number of game-focused reasons super-high framerates matter, but primarily its movement and player feel. The game just feels amazing running that fast, so we made it a priority to try to really exploit the available hardware on PC."

Those aren't the only perks, though, and id expects that some older GPUs will now be able to run the game at solid framerates.

You can find out where and how to download Vulkan for Doom in id's blog post.
