Xbox One owners can now send games as digital gifts

Microsoft has introduced digital gift-giving on its flagship console, just ahead of the holiday season.

Microsoft has enabled digital gift-giving on the Xbox One, just ahead of the impending holiday season.

The company first trialed digital gifting as a feature exclusive to a select few participants in its Xbox Insider Program last month but has now rolled out gifting for all users.

This means that players will be able to gift individual games directly to others rather than the old-fashioned method of sending a gift card their way with a suggestion of which title to put it towards. Now players can send a game to another person's email account directly from the title's listing in the Xbox One store

As Forbes points out, there are seemingly a few restrictions on the games that can be gifted through the new system. For example, preorders, Xbox One Play Anywhere games, and both Xbox and Xbox 360 backward compatible titles can't be purchased as gifts. Sale items come with their own set of restrictions as well, limiting purchasers to gifting only 10 sale titles in a two week period, with the limitation that the same discounted game can only be gifted twice in that same span of time.

Other platforms like Valve have also retooled gift-giving policies ahead of the holiday season. On Steam, Valve recently added digital gift cards into the mix and put a kibosh on stockpiling giftable games earlier this year.
