"Most of my games are reality simulations. We are at the point now that we have enough data to turn your life into a gaming platform."
- Will Wright
SimCity creator Will Wright is back with a new release today -- but it's not a game. It's Thred, a new social media app and the subject of a lengthy interview-profile-review over on Polygon.
In the article, Wright discusses how he got interested "in games that connect you to reality" -- and how the current ubiquity of mobile devices has pulled his interest in a new direction.
With Thred, users can create comic book-like narratives about their lives using the media on the smartphones, and share them.
"I think the most interesting thing I see happening right now -- I don't know if in the world, but just in technology -- has been how powerful and personal and networked these things have become so rapidly," Wright says.
This is not the first time Wright has touched on this idea; at the 2013 GDC Game Design Challenge, Wright presented a game that "aimed to disentangle meaningful memories from mundane ones on social networks."
Thred is not a game, however, but an app -- will Wright ever return to games?
"I don't have a master plan for my life in terms of 'I will not do games' or 'I will do this.' My interest kind of drives me in different directions," he tells Polygon.
If you're interested in knowing more, there's plenty in the extensive profile.
