GameTrailers announced today via its Twitter account that the video game video hub is shutting down, over a year after it was sold to Defy Media by Viacom in a layoff-ridden 2014 deal

The news is remarkable in light of the fact that we've spent the last few years reporting on the rise of video game broadcasters via platforms like YouTube and Twitch. GameTrailers was one of the trailblazers of Internet videos about video games, so it's a bit striking to see the company closing its doors thirteen years after it launched in the summer of 2002.

It's not as though GameTrailers neglected these new platforms, either -- in addition to maintaining its own video platform, the company currently has a presence on both YouTube and Twitch

You can watch its final broadcast on the latter channel at 6 PM Pacific tonight (stream embedded above) for more details on why and how it's calling it quits.
