Middleware and engine maker Unity Technologies has announced it is continuing its Asian expansion with a new Tokyo office and a partnership with major Japanese mobile social game network GREE. Unity Technologies Japan will offer sales, localization and support for Unity products in the country under the guidance of former Sega executive vice president Shinobu Toyoda. "The establishment of the Unity Technologies Japan office and the addition to our company of such a knowledgeable, passionate team further cement Unity Technologies' commitment to democratize games development globally," Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason said in a statement. In addition, Unity has announced that Japan's GREE social game paltform has signed on as a master-license holder for the Unity SDK, letting it offer free sub-licenses to the bulk of its Android and iOS development partners in Japan. "We are excited to extend our relationship with GREE in Japan," said Unity's Asian general manager John Goodale in a statement. "GREE and Unity share a common vision, which is to make massive amounts of great content available for the burgeoning smartphone market in Japan." Both moves come weeks after Unity secured $12 million in venture funding from China-based WestSummit Capital and Singapore-based iGlobe Partners to help with its efforts in Asia.
