Popular game engine creator Unity Technologies today launched the latest version of its Unity engine, adding support for Windows Phone 8, Windows Store apps and BlackBerry 10. With Unity 4.2, the engine now supports twice as many mobile development platforms as before. Notably, all users of the free version of Unity can publish to any of these newly supported mobile platforms, on top of the original free support. Meanwhile, a number of features that were previously only available to paying Unity Pro customers can now be used as part of the free version of Unity. These include real-time shadows, text-based serialization of materials, prefabs, scenes etc. for easier version control, and NavMesh baking. Elsewhere, Unity Pro users now have the option to use the Windows Store Pro deployment option free of charge. There's plenty more additional features and changes in the new update, including licensing changes. It's worth reading over the official blog post for more details.
