UK Government promises more visas, more investment for tech sector

As part of the new 'support package,' the Government will look to double the number of visas handed out to the 'brightest and best talent' from around the world, including those in digital technology, to 2000.

The UK Government has pledged significant support for the country's tech industry ahead of next week's Budget announcement.

Prime Minister Teresa May and Chancellor Phillip Hammond outlined their plans on the government website,  and it's good news for those with a vested interest in the sector.

As part of the new 'support package,' the government will look to double the number of visas handed out to the 'brightest and best talent' from around the world, including those in digital technology, to 2000.

It's a move that will no doubt help game studios recruit sorely needed overseas talent, and the Home Office says it will work with organizations across the UK to ensure more of those visas get taken up by firms outside of London.

The PM has also agreed to invest around £21 million to expect the Tech City UK initiative -- which aids digital start-ups -- into a nationwide network dubbed 'Tech Nation.'

A £20 million fund will be established to help public services take advantage of UK expertise in innovative technology like artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, a new £20 million training program will take on the challenge of training young people aged between 14 and 18 to recognize and combat cyber security threats.

"Helping our world-class entrepreneurs and innovators to succeed is how we lay the foundations for our prosperity and build an economy fit for the future," said the PM.

"Technology is at the heart of our modern Industrial Strategy, and we will continue to invest in the best new innovations and ideas, in the brightest and best talent, and in revolutionary digital infrastructure.

"And as we prepare to leave the European Union, I am clear that Britain will remain open for business. That means Government doing all it can to secure a strong future for our thriving tech sector and ensure people in all corners of our nation share in the benefits of its success."
