Ubisoft yanks AC Unity season pass, placates buyers with free game

Amidst long-running technical issues with Assassin's Creed Unity, Ubisoft has abruptly curtailed its DLC plans and made some significant business concessions to appease those who purchased the game. This is notable because it continues an ongoing trend of developers at AAA companies like Ubisoft, Microsoft and Sony scrambling to make good after releasing high-profile titles (Unity, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Driveclub) with significant post-launch problems. Ubisoft Montreal & Toronto CEO Yannis Mallat published an update to the Assassin's Creed Unity Live Blog today with a promise that the company is continuing to patch the game, and an assurance that the upcoming Unity DLC pack Dead Kings -- which was originally intended to be paid DLC included with the game's Season Pass program -- will be free to download. "At launch, the overall quality of the game was diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues," wrote Mallat. "I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin's Creed team." Ubisoft still seems intent on releasing further content for Season Pass holders, and it's yet unclear whether it will be made free for everyone. The company is also discontinuing both digital and retail sales of the Unity Season Pass and offering a free game to those who've already purchased it. You can find a full list of the games available, as well as terms and conditions for claiming one, on the offer website.
