Ubisoft comes out on top in DRM patent lawsuit

Ubisoft has won favorable summary judgement from a U.S. District Court judge that allows it to extricate itself from a long-running legal tussle over DRM patents relating its Uplay service.
Newsbrief: Ubisoft announced today that it has received summary judgement from a U.S. District Court judge that allows it to extricate itself from a long-running legal tussle over patents relating to digital rights management, including Ubisoft's Uplay service. The lawsuit began with a complaint filed in 2011 by Digital Reg of Texas, LLC, against Adobe Systems, Valve, Ubisoft and other companies over various aspects of their digital content delivery and authentication services. Some of the defendants (like Valve) have settled while others, like Ubisoft, have been found not guilty of infringement. "Ubisoft is determined to aggressively fight patent cases that target the company and its innovations and technologies," read a statement from a Ubisoft representative regarding the company's legal victory. "Ubisoft is committed to defending itself against patent assertion entities – referred to as patent 'trolls' -- that assert invalid or inapplicable patents against the company or the industry."
