Team Meat: Roughly 600,000 Sales For Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy creators Tommy Refenes and Edmund Mcmillen -- the self-styled Team Meat -- said the title has sold roughly 600,000 copies across Xbox Live Arcade and Steam. The new numbers were revealed in an interview with portable-focused site Pocketful of Megabytes, and combine an estimated 200,000 sales on Xbox Live Arcade and sales "approaching 400,000" on Steam. The Steam sales were largely driven by a holiday promotion sale, McMilllen said. At a late-February GDC presentation on the game's hectic development, the team said cross-platform sales for the title had surpassed 400,000. While the pair definitely prefers the development freedom offered by the downloadable marketplace, they said they're still not sure whether they'll be targeting a retail or an eShop release for a planned 3DS version. "We don’t exactly know what we want to do," Mcmillen said. "The more freedom you have the better. And that’s why we’re leaning towards not doing retail, because it’d just cause more problems for us. ... We’ve heard that the downloadable stuff is going to be much better for the 3DS." McMillen also addressed the long-planned Wii version of Super Meat Boy, which he said was eventually cancelled primarily because of the current state of the Wii market, where he said only family-oriented budget titles are finding success these days. "Everybody basically got cold feet about it and said that it was too big of a risk for them to take on an investment like this at this point in the Wii’s life cycle," he said. "The Wii is kinda being phased out at this point, and retail for the Wii has been… well you go to any store and look in the $20 budget titles section and you’ll see that it’s just flooded with crap." McMillen said forum-goers have created two full chapters' worth of new levels, which will be released for Xbox 360 players over the coming year.
