Survey: First-person shooters are the most popular eSport to watch

When asked by the research arm of PwC which genres they watch, 63 percent of survey respondents who identified as eSports viewers said first-person shooters, as opposed to just 37 percent for MOBAs.

The market research arm of business multinational PwC has dedicated the latest report in its Consumer Intelligence series to eSports, and results from its ~700 person survey on the topic suggest that despite the remarkable popularity of MOBAs, first-person shooters are still the most popular eSport to watch.

When asked which genres of games they usually watch, 63 percent of survey respondents who identified as eSports viewers said first-person shooters, 37 percent said MOBAs and 36 percent said fighting games.

That seems to contradict some popular assumptions that MOBAs are the dominant eSport to watch right now, assumptions predicated on reports like this one from EEDAR last year that claims, based on a survey of over 2,000 people, that League of Legends is the most popular game among eSports fans.

An equally interesting statistic in the PwC report is that 22 percent of women surveyed said they are "involved with eSports," compared to just 18 percent of men surveyed.

That involvement could connote either playing or watching games PwC classified as eSports (first-person shooters, MOBAs, fighting games, or MMORPGs played competitively) and suggests that men and women who play games are interested in eSports in roughly equal measure .

However, the number of men and women surveyed by PwC was not equal (more men than women were surveyed, at a ratio of 56 to 44 percent) and a recent Nielsen survey suggests eSports fans (those who play and/or watch) are overwhelmingly male.

Of course, EEDAR, Nielsen and PwC used different survey sizes, samples, and question phrasing, so they're best appreciated as different snapshots in time of the same overall phenomenon. You can take a deeper look at PwC's report on eSports for yourself over on its website.
