Steam Spy creator analyzes the platform, shares his data

If you're wondering how the Steam market functions, this new data-driven overview should give you a very good working picture.

Developer Sergey Galyonkin launched Steam Spy in April, and has been scraping a huge amount of data from Valve's marketplace and publicly sharing it since that time.

While there are some obvious risks with trusting that data (and also with using it to make decisions for your game), Gamasutra's also been told off-the-record by more than one developer that Steam Spy's data is in the right ballpark for their games.

Now, Galyonkin has penned an extensive new blog post that breaks down the overall data he's collected, and which offers up everything from regional breakdowns of Steam users to the genres that sell on the platform.

For example, 28 percent of games on Steam are owned by users in the U.S.; meanwhile, the RPG genre is the most popular on the platform.

Again, the data is not a 100 percent accurate picture of what is happening on Steam, but it should be reliable enough to serve as food for thought.

"With a good game, hard work and a bit of luck you’ll do fine on Steam," Galyonkin writes.
