Sony Investigating PSN Outage, Service May Be Down For 'A Day Or Two'

Sony is reporting that certain functions of the PlayStation Network have been down since yesterday evening, and that it may be "a full day or two" before the service is completely up and running again. Problems with the network were first acknowledged by Sony at 8:50 p.m. Eastern yesterday in a PlayStation.blog post, with an update this morning warning that full repairs could take up to a couple of days. No reason has been announced for the outage, but the free online service is currently inaccessible from PS3s and PSPs across the United States and Europe. Users that try to log in to the web-based PlayStation Store are greeted with a message saying "the server is currently down for maintenance." Earlier this month, hacker collective Anonymous threatened Sony's network with a distributed denial of service attack in protest of the company's treatment of a group of PlayStation 3 hackers in court. But the group halted its attack days later, postponing its efforts "until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers," a spokesperson said. Sony claims over 70 million registered users on PSN, which saw revenues increase 70 percent in 2010, according to a GDC presentation by SCEA distribution manager Pierre Gravereau.
