Seeing a potential crossover between its credit services and the big spenders for Riot Games' smash hit MOBA League of Legends
, American Express is rolling out a new partnership with Riot through prepaid debit cards -- which come bundled with Riot Point incentives.
"There is a great opportunity for brands here, particularly brands that make sense for our players [who are] becoming harder to reach on TV and other mediums," explained Riot vice president of eSports Dustin Beck, as reported in the New York Times
. "We are about loyalty, we are about contact and long-lasting engagement."
Customers who sign up for one of the LoL
-themed debit cards will receive 1,000 complimentary Riot Points to spend on champions or items within the game, and an additional 1,000 points for every $20 loaded onto the card. Incentives are also offered for numbers of purchases and for linking the card with a direct deposit account.
Stefan Happ, general manager for online and mobile at American Express, said the partnership is geared toward "expand[ing] our traditional reach beyond the mass affluent."
The cards are set to be made available this Wednesday, August 14th.
