PlayStation 4 crosses 18.5 million units sold globally

The company now has 10.9 million PlayStation Plus subscribers -- and sold 4.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles across the globe in its holiday sales period.

Today, Sony announced that it has sold 18.5 million PlayStation 4 units globally, with 4.1 million of those sold between November 23, 2014 and January 4, 2015, as the holiday sales period draws to a close.

The company now has 10.9 million subscribers to its PlayStation Plus program, which allows players to download free games and access online play on the PlayStation 4.

We don't have updated numbers for the Xbox One; Microsoft said in November that the platform was "nearing" 10 million sales. While Wii U sales received a boost from Smash Bros., we're also still waiting to find out Nintendo's up-to-date numbers. The Wii U had sold 7.29 million units as of September 30, 2014.
