New video game documentary tied to top dev talent

The video production company is trying to crowdfund a series of six documentaries on topics like game preservation, the fighting game community, speedrunners, and more.
Newsbrief: AREA 5, the company responsible for producing documentaries like I Am Street Fighter and Grounded: Making The Last Of Us, has launched a pretty neat Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of Outerlands: Season One, a six-episode series of short documentaries about video game culture. Proposed topics include game preservation, the fighting game community, speedrunners, and more. The Kickstarter campaign's goal is set at $210,000, though AREA 5 has gone ahead and outlined what it could do if the campaign hits stretch goals of up to $620,000. The team at AREA 5 is collaborating with folks like Jim Guthrie, Cory Schmitz and Phil Fish to produce music and art for the series, and if enough money is raised the company intends to hire freelancers -- including journalists and podcasters -- to produce additional content. The first season of Outerlands will be released as a complete six-episode package, 18 months after the Kickstarter campaign ends, so even if it proves successful, we aren't likely to see the finished product until July 2015 at the earliest.
