Today, New Line Cinema announced that it plans to develop a new film based on the
Mortal Kombat license, and has named Kevin Tancharoen as the project's director.
Tancharoen previously experimented with the
Mortal Kombat universe in 2010, when he directed a short film titled
Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. He later created the subsequent web-series
Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which further experimented with a live-action take on the violent fighting game series.
Tancharoen's other directorial work includes Britney Spears' The Onyx Hotel Tour, and Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, on which he also served as project choreographer.
In addition, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth writer Oren Uziel has also signed on to write the screenplay for the new
Mortal Kombat film.
The project will be co-produced between New Line and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and is currently targeting a 2013 release.
Of course, this won't be the first time
Mortal Kombat has made its way onto the big screen. The 1990s saw two films based on the games, dubbed Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, respectively.
Earlier this month, Warner Bros. announced that the recent
Mortal Kombat reboot for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 has
sold more than 3 million units worldwide.
