Media Create Disappointed With Japanese PS Vita Opening Week Sales

Following the launch of the PlayStation Vita handheld console in Japan, tracking firm Media Create has stated that it is disappointed with the opening weekend sales figures for the latest Sony hardware release. The PS Vita launched on December 17 in Japan, and sold over 325,000 units in the first two days on sale, compared to the 371,326 units that the Nintendo 3DS sold in its opening weekend. As translated by Andriasang, Media Create CEO Atsushi Hosokawa has now said that, while the console launch was a success, Sony could really have done with selling more. "The shipment was abundant, so it seems that there were hardly any reports of inability to buy due to shortages," he explained. "Regarding sold units, to be honest we would like to have seen it sell a bit more, but you can say that it reached a certain level of success." Hosokawa said that the high price was to blame, along with the fact that the console doesn't have a strong system-selling title at launch. He also noted that the PS Vita's predecessor, the PSP, is still selling well in Japan, and may well have factored in the PS Vita's opening week sales.
