Crowdfunding website Kickstarter has officially opened its doors to creators based in Japan, meaning game developers in the region can finally get in on the action. 

Although anyone living in Japan could already back projects, those actually seeking funding had to work with collaborators in other countries to run their own campaigns. 

But going forward, Japanese creators will be able to launch projects without having to seek help from outside their home nation. 

For Kickstater, the move and bolsters its presence in Asia, with the firm having already branched out into Hong Kong and Singapore. 

"Artists, authors, filmmakers, musicians, designers, and creators of all types can now launch projects and find support from Kickstarter's global community of backers," reads the Kickstarter blog.

"In addition to making it easy for creators in Japan to launch projects using their Japanese bank account and identification, we've made the Kickstarter site and mobile apps available in Japanese.

"We're also providing customer support and project review in Japanese. Kickstarter is dedicated to supporting the needs of Japanese creators, and we will continue listening and improving the experience for the local community in Japan."
