Kabam lays off staff at its San Francisco HQ

Gamasutra has learned that mobile game publisher and developer Kabam (Star Wars Uprising, Marvel Contest of Champions) has laid off a number of employees at its headquarters in San Francisco.

Gamasutra has learned that mobile game publisher and developer Kabam, best known for free-to-play games like Star Wars Uprising and Marvel Contest of Champions, has laid off a number of employees at its headquarters in San Francisco.

This comes roughly six months after a significant round of cuts at Kabam that saw 8 percent of the company's development staff laid off. At the time, Kabam chief Kevin Chou said the studio is spending roughly $14 million on every mobile game it develops as it continues to shift towards making "fewer, bigger, bolder games."

It's yet unclear how many people lost their jobs in this latest round of cuts. A company representative confirmed the layoffs to Gamasutra and offered only the following comment as explanation:

"Kabam’s business strategy is to focus on fewer, bigger, and bolder AAA mobile games. We have made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our San Francisco-based studio. While we are making several large investments in a new slate of games in multiple locations, we must also be mindful of costs. We are extremely grateful to all the employees who have contributed to the longstanding history of Kabam’s San Francisco studio. This hard but essential decision allows us to stay focused on our mission to create the world’s favorite massively multiplayer free-to-play games."

If you or someone you know was affected by this decision you can email Gamasutra to tell your story confidentially.
