Humble Bundle is now funding development of 'Humble Original' games

Humble Monthly, the "book club for games," is now reaching over 70k subscribers and generating enough revenue for the company to fund development of new games for those same subscribers.

Humble Bundle co-founder John Graham told Destructoid this week that Humble Monthly, the $12/month service Humble debuted last year as a sort of "book club for games," is now reaching over 70,000 subscribers and generating enough revenue for the company to fund development of new games for those same subscribers.

The subscriber figure itself is potentially of interest to developers mulling over distribution strategies for their games, though since there are few (if any) competing services it's hard to evaluate whether this is a significant milestone for Humble Monthly.

But according to Graham, the subscription service has grown enough in the four months since launch that Humble is now able to put some money into funding development of "Humble Originals," games made exclusively for the Humble Monthly game packs.

"Because we can predict revenues fairly accurately, we've even started funding some small gaming projects, Humble Originals, that you won't find anywhere else and that our subscribers will get to play first," Graham told Destructoid.

Mighty Rabbit Studios' Elephant In The Room is the first such game, and was released to Humble Monthly subscribers this month. Humble seems intent on funding similar projects in the months to come, and Gamasutra has contacted the company for further details on whether it plans to publish those games outside the purview of Humble Monthly.
