Halo World Championship will have record-breaking prize pool

The prize pool for the Halo World Championship has been locked in at $2.5 million, with the first placed team set to take home a total of $1 million - the largest individual prize pool in console eSports history.

The prize pool for the Halo World Championship has been locked in at $2.5 million, with the first placed team set to take home a total of $1 million - the largest individual prize pool in console eSports history.

According to Microsoft, which broke the news through its Xbox Wire blog, the prize pool has grown "immensely" thanks to the performance of Halo 5's microtransactions.

When the tournament was first announced at Gamescom 2015, the prize pool stood at $1 million. However, Microsoft pledged to add a portion of any income made off the back of Halo 5's REQ Pack sales to the kitty.

In November last year developer 343 revealed $500,000 had been added as a result of those microtransactions, and now it seems an extra $1 million has been raised by the Halo 5 community.
