Live events can be one way to extract increased traffic and revenue from free-to-play players. Gree reports that one of its titles, Modern War, has done exceptionally well with large-scale events.

Social and mobile giant Gree reports that it is seeing activity spike heavily during live events for Funzio's free-to-play iOS and Android game, Modern War. According to Gree, the publisher saw Modern War logins double and revenues increase by up to 600 percent during live events first launched in January, in which players formed factions and faced off against together in a massive MOBA-styled campaign. Gree reported a $2.3 million in revenue from one such weekend-long event. It's an interesting example in driving player engagement in free-to-play titles, something that has worked out well for other games in the past. It's also notable in that Modern War first launched in 2011, meaning it's possible for these kinds of community events to spur interest even after the game's initial release hype has waned.
