GDC Europe: Learn how Epic is openly developing Unreal Tournament

Come to GDC Europe 2015 this August to hear Epic Games' Jim Brown explain the harsh lessons the storied studio learned while experimenting in open development of Unreal Tournament.

GDC officials are still striving to line up great talks for GDC Europe this year, and today they're happy to announce two more exciting sessions for the upcoming August conference.

These talks showcase the strong emphasis on all aspects of game design that's being programmed into this year's conference, which will take place August 3rd and 4th in Cologne, Germany. No matter what kind of games you're making or how you're making it, there's sure to be something on the GDC Europe Design track of talks that will help you improve your skills.

For example, consider Epic Games' upcoming Unreal Tournament: an experiment in open development. the game was publicly available from the very first line of code and is being built as a collaboration between Epic Games and its community. At GDC Europe, Epic's Jim Brown will share his studio's harsh lessons learned about communication and community management that often ran counter to experience, expectation, and intuition in a talk titled simply "The Impact of Open Development on Unreal Tournament."

Brown will also break down how extreme transparency helped Epic streamline its development processes, tools, and systems and helped distill the focus of its designs for maximum accessibility.

Elsewhere at GDC Europe, British studio Lumo Developments will be presenting a seminar on designing gameplay loops that remain compelling regardless of whether players pick your game up for 30 seconds or 30 hours. In "Fear, Love and Great Big Ideas" Lumo design director Jonathan Evans will deconstruct good game loops and offer new and powerful set of analytic techniques with which to look at your game, break down the experience and spot problems that will lose you players 00 whether you are making an epic PC game or the most lightweight mobile game.

You can find more details on these and all other announced talks on the GDC Europe Schedule Builder, and early birds can still register for GDC Europe 2015 by July 8th to save 200 euros on an All Access Pass.

And there's more to GDC Europe than just an all-star lineup of sessions, as the conference will also continue to offer business and matchmaking opportunities to all attendees with a developer-focused Expo Floor area and networking events throughout the show.
